TSUNAMI:LOSS
Ephemeral & fragile aspects of life are represented by torn scraps of photos & news releases. Flotsam is all that may remain of so many lives decimated by the tsunami. Without dwelling on the horror, this series attempts to show both the beauty which drew the tourists and the devastation. The turbulence of the giant waves, which swallowed unsuspecting lives is suggested by the upside down & sideways positioning of the photos. The newspaper clippings represent both the actuality of the event & the fugitive aspect of life. The use of encaustic (first used by ancient Greeks & Romans) represents the permanence of the life spirit which persists in spite of nature’s overwhelming power. Beautiful colors portray the paradox of an horrific event in settings of such inherent BEAUTY.
