My work explores power, and its visual culture, through the absurd and repulsive. I do this by taking readily recognizable political, commercial, and historical images, and fusing them with grotesque and ridiculous elements. These hybrids become puns on their subjects, functioning as a kind of anti-propaganda that subverts and re-directs the assumed meaning of the original.
My subjects are often iconic representations of authority. These can be depictions of positions of power in a literal sense, such a presidential portraits, or the implied authenticity of a Google search result. I put these subjects in a light that emphasizes their imperfections, making obvious the fragile and subjective nature of their authority.
