Palimpsests
The series "Palimpsests," is my most recent effort as an artist to visualize and preserve the collected mental textures I'm continuously gathering. Each piece is the result of an endless series of additions and revisions as countless layers of mediums mesh in an attempt to record my visual sensibilities. The works are always created in large groups. In many paintings the entire face of the piece, regardless of its completeness, will be reconsidered since none of the images is immune to being consumed by the days fits and starts. I will often bring the same tone to several pieces at a time. It allows for looking at the elements compatability in contrast or in harmony across several possible outcomes. Like a palimpsest the works many traces of earlier layers will continue to weigh in on a pieces creation. They will vary from the relief of a collage to the persistance of ballpoint pen ink that will migrate to the surface weighing in with its comments long after being blanketed over by subsequent directions. The end result will ideally continue to serve up a variety of visual reminders or clues telling of how important certain influences have been and over time and where they led. Over many years this process will allow me to imagine the body of work as a stop action time line slowly revealing the newly favored elements and influences only to see them recede and evolve again as my changing guides and exposure leave its mark on my art making.
