in the his current practice, the artist examines the scope of the expressive possibilities offered
"Over the last ten years, the career of Daniel Villeneuve has gradually evolved towards abstraction, with geometric lines a prominent feature. Exhibition curator of the Contemporary Museum of Montreal, Gilles Godmer, points out that, "in the his current practice, the artist examines the scope of the expressive possibilities offered by a vocabulary based essentially on the grid motif ... Daniel Villeneuve rises to the challenge with intelligence and panache. He embarks on a new facet in his work, in which painting and architecture are closely connected." The curator adds: "Inspired, as well as determined ... these works create a unique site where painting and architecture reveal their complicity, in a rare, fruitful dialogue bringing out each other's qualities." Margaret Thatcher of the gallery Margaret Thatcher Projects in New York describes Daniel Villeneuve's "Plates" exhibition as,"... panels placed one on top of the other, with the sides of each layer angled to reveal the edge of the painted layer immediately below. The artist applies many layers of thin color, until he achieves a color that seems to glow with is own internal light. The gallery director continues, "The move to monochrome was not an unusual one for Villeneuve ... for him the layering of one painting over the other is a way to address the grid without conforming to its structural demands." Daniel Villeneuve is born in Quebec, Canada in 1960, he work and live in New York City since 1990.
