meaning-manufacturing
Sagerman works in oil on canvas, applying small dabs of paint with a palette knife which accumulate to great thickness over time. His work has appeared in solo and group shows in Manhattan and Brooklyn, has been reviewed by noted art critic Enzo Siciliano for "la Republicca" and is currently being represented by Ducesa Fine Arts. His work as an all-over field painter harmonizes with his current doctoral study in Jewish Mysticism, as both direct him toward an ongoing encounter with the metaphysical and existential implications of the notion of "nothingness." The time dimension involved in his coloristic work, as a painting grows over the course of months, triggers an internal hermeneutical practice by which the artist can observe his own internal, meditative activity of meaning-manufacturing, one within which he falls back again and again upon mystical notions of being and time, mediated through his research in Jewish mysticism. The ferment resulting from this intersection of art and mysticism forms the crux both of his cerebral and sensual explorations in painting and of his forthcoming art historical work, "A Kabbalistic Reading of the Sisting Ceiling."
