Painting to me is the physical act of translating into form something that is limitless. It is a thoughtful expression of my world. I am inspired by the drama of nature. The natural world is full of opposites in constant flux. I want to dissect the balance that keeps those opposing elements harmonious and translate that dynamic onto canvas. I use the idea of portraying movement through a multi-layered surface of color, line and shape. Layers present a physical metaphor, a stage for dredging up subconscious imagery. Softened lines beneath the surface create a history, a story that unfolds as the viewer draws connections.

My work is driven by the challenges presented to me in the materials and process. I push the materials to see what I can get them to do. As the process unfolds the behavior of the paint becomes the guide and adds to the content. When I let go of control the process takes the painting to a level where intuitive response and improvisation play a major part.

To capture the illusion of a natural light source on a two-dimensional picture plane I use a personal order through form and color. My color language layers color nuance with shape. All color choice is intuitive. Personal ideas that began the painting are let go as the surface is built up. Translucent color schemes are manipulated through diffusion and interruption to reveal color depth. Shapes are buried within the paint to reemerge transformed. Through a deep inner search an object of beauty is created that transcends the order of the ordinary world.

The ultimate meaning of interpretation depends on the viewer. I hope to create work that evokes a response that demonstrates how the mind interprets complex information that the eye sees.
