My carved
wood sculptures are the realization of a process. The many forms colors and
concepts I experience and develop conspire to present an entity that has
emerged from my subconscious.
During the
waking state, or during dreams or through the evolution of the drawing process,
the sculptures appear. Many of my sculptures are informed by the universal
ancient myths of Greece, Italy, Asia and the Americas. Goddesses, guardians and
prophets have appeared. Christian iconography has been a persistent force in
recent series.
Drawing the
images repeatedly as they appear allows for a familiarity with the concept and
its forms. These drawings enable the initial concept to grow, to flourish and
to take me to unfamiliar ground. This process encourages an openness and
readiness to engage the new.
In my earliest
works the subconscious itself appeared as burgeoning and blossoming organic
entities. In pieces such as the Octopus the metaphor for the subconscious is
clear.
