We are not always privy to seeing things that are imperceptible or invisible to the human eye. I would like to unite these hidden worlds, with my own visual elements from my imagination through my work.

I create brightly colored paintings of imaginary worlds. They are primarily based on biological structures and topographical maps. I am fascinated by the intricate patterns and configurations of microorganisms, and in the construction and formation of urban and natural landscapes.

Dimensionally, my subjects are drastically different. I meld elements of both micro and macro worlds together in proportionate scale, allowing the visual components of both worlds to blend together. The end result is an amalgamation of found scientific and geographic images, and alternative references such as popular motifs, international symbols, and astrological illustrations.

I find my initial images from the internet, text books, and periodicals such as Scientific America and National Geographic. Through a process of digital manipulation and my own visual filtering I render a preliminary “draft”, which I use for the main composition of each piece. I mostly use acrylic on canvas for the final painting. However, I experiment with gouache, ink, design marker, colored pencils, and colored paper in preliminary drawings, studies, and collages.

I prefer, but do not limit myself, to using bright, synthetic colors not usually found in nature. This sets up a dichotomy between my subjects, which are mostly natural elements, emphasizing the fact that the paintings themselves are blueprints of artificial and fictitious environments.

I explore the hidden worlds of microsystems and the structure of our geography and architecture from a bird’s eye perspective. Through my observations, I create imaginary realms of my own, where germs can be landscapes and cities exist in cells. I attempt to reconcile my own visual vocabulary with my found images and references on a two-dimensional surface through this process.
