I layer each canvas with expanses of color and dense masses of freely applied, intersecting lines, often using contrasting colors to create depth. The result is an encompassing, dynamic image abundant with pockets of space: an environment where the eye can wander, inspect and repeatedly discover new details.
My pictures are abstract and earthy at once. The lines are inspired by those that occur in nature and accidentally on manmade surfaces, such as striations on a tree trunk or cracks on a sidewalk. Applied repeatedly over a plane of color, these lines create texture and can hint at natural settings or objects: a verdant enclosure, layers of cobweb, sun-flecked water or a close-up view of fire. I apply the lines with the rhythms of an action painter, and the human hand is always evident in the final image.
