Working Bodies
I am concerned with biomorphic shapes and forms. I see human bodies as organs that continually fluctuate – swelling, distending and expelling. Things are ingested at one end of this system and processed through it affecting the nature of the organs, vessels and fluids inside. These are working bodies, shifting size and shape often, yet remaining the same. The cell’s ability to consume and conquer foreign matter or mutate itself and multiply adds to its shifty and sometimes deadly nature. Growths, protrusions on the surface of skin are manifestations of the inner workings we cannot see, yet they make one feel things. I use inks charcoal and gouache to mimic these hidden relationships. The nature of the fluid ink and gouache are absorbed by the charcoal and paper leaving strong shapes or weak traces of their paths, which allude to the complexity of this internal landscape.
