I collect headlines from the New York Times and use them as data for systems that generate complex networks and forms. The headlines are organized chronologically and color-coded according to subject. Global, national, and local events generate a continuous stream of news from which color patterns emerge. The actions of George Bush, Bill Clinton, the United Nations, Israel, Palestine, and North Korea, among others, all serve as raw material and influence the structure of my work. I spend thousands of hours in the library photocopying microfilm in order to reproduce the exact font and size of the headlines. Over the past two years I have accumulated a huge mass of these photocopies which I then sort, organize, catalogue, enter into the computer, and color-code. This process is ongoing and I will eventually record and color-code one hundred years of headlines. My projects are driven by an analysis of the mass media as well as the processes of accumulation, archiving, and record keeping. These projects are monumental works that speak to: a common history, memory, and the passage of time.
