working in the American tradition
I am working in the American tradition of the regional landscape painters such as Edward Hopper and Charles Sheeler, but also working out of the innovations of Modernist painters such as Mark Rothko and Ad Rienhardt. By balancing the metaphorical and metaphysical qualities of realism with the formal aspects of minimalism I create a reflection of the inherent tension present in our environment. The physical structures that society builds are the mirrors of ourselves and of our relationship with nature; we create them to separate the natural from the unnatural, the measurable from the immeasurable. The roads and spaces that I paint represent the psychological space between these states. It is a vacuous silent space where one can project one's self into the painting to find one's own place and meaning.
