Citizen of the World
Nancy Baker is an artist who professes great interest in "how we look at art", how art functions as a reflection or mirror of a much larger system and our place in that system. As a "citizen of the world," she wishes to exercise a "lack of judgement" about the value of things that she appropriates. Unlike the traditional artistic approach to art-making, she is less interested in what she calls the "emotional approach" to art, the approach that places the artist in the role of making judgements concerning formal, aesthetic values. She is more interested in the "intellectual real estate" of images. By "appropriating" images from medieval sources and placing them in a new context, there is inherently a value judgement, yet because these images appear severed from their original framework, they acquire new meaning.
