My work is a continuous process of self-exploration and
cultural identification in the realm of east and west. I am interested in the
issues of displacement as they relate to race and gender. The underlying social
and political theme is displayed in a playful and ironic manner. Patterns and
grids lay the foundation for my works. I often borrow popular icons and symbols
used across culture, and also adopt them to comic strip fragmented and
ambiguous form; they have been surrealistically juxtaposed to overlay to
symbolize the metamorphosis of our cultures.
Different thickness of paint,
graphic impact and deliberate spaces and, together with repetitions of images
and dynamic lines are used to evoke a sense of complexity and contrast---
intimidating yet playful, decorative yet chaotic and vulgar, yet mysterious.
